smoke alarm legislation.
House fires kill more Australians than all natural hazards - 900 people died in preventable residential fires in Australia between 2003 and 2017 (Risk Frontiers, 2019). Statistics show that non-working smoke alarms increase the risk of dying in house fire by 80 per cent.
New Queensland legislation specifies that all dwellings are required to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms, in hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the dwelling and on every level.
To comply with legislation, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms are required:
From 1 January 2017: in all new dwellings and substantially renovated dwellings (this applies to building applications submitted from 1 January 2017).
From 1 January 2022: in all domestic dwellings leased and sold.

An evacuation diagram is comprised of emergency procedures, floor plans indicating the safest exit pathways and the location of firefighting equipment. The emergency procedure outlines the process to follow in the event of a fire and helps keep you, your staff and building occupants safe.
